This article makes use of primary sources to reconstruct Carl Schmitt's engagement with the work Hannah Arendt. It focuses on Eichmann in Jerusalem (1963): a book that Schmitt called “exciting” and made him sick “for couple weeks.” The examines marginalia explore reasons behind this ambiguous reaction. situates reading Arendt aftermath his 1945 defense writings which he had come close legitimizing international criminal prosecution Nazi officials: position feared could backfire against himself light trial. Despite points agreement their critiques depoliticized legality, remained limited by anti-Semitic hatred fear persecution. Driven sense antagonism rather than dialogue, meticulous collection reveals above all turned her search theoretical weapons self-defense.
